Personal veneration is available in the Chapel during the hour before the 11:30 a.m. Mass, offering quiet time for prayer and reflection.

St. John Neumann’s feast day is January 5. In honor of his life and witness, the National Shrine will bring his relic from the Apparition Oratory to the Apparition Chapel for veneration that day.

St. John Neumann was a missionary priest and the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia. Born in Bohemia, he came to the United States to serve the growing Catholic population, especially immigrants. He is remembered for his deep devotion to the Eucharist, his care for the poor, and his work to establish Catholic schools. In 1977, he became the first male American bishop to be canonized a saint.
