St. Kateri Tekakwitha – Saints of America Biography
Kateri Tekakwitha (1656–1680) was born in what is now New York to a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin mother who was a Catholic. Orphaned at a young age and left scarred and partially blind from smallpox, she grew up facing hardship and isolation. Drawn to the Catholic faith despite pressure from her community, she was baptized at age 20 and became known for her deep devotion, humility, and prayer life. Seeking greater freedom to live her faith, she moved to a Catholic mission near Montreal. There, she cared for the sick, taught children, and lived a life of holiness and simplicity. Her gentleness, courage, and spiritual dedication inspired many. She is honored as the first Native American saint in the Catholic Church.
