Celebrate the 2025 Jubilee at Champion Shrine as Pilgrims of Hope

The Universal Church celebrates a Jubilee in the year 2025 and it is an incredible opportunity for the faithful to renew one’s life of prayer and receive special jubilee graces! With the theme, “Pilgrims of Hope,” the Holy Father desires the Church to “fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and farsighted vision.”

Many choose to participate in the Jubilee Year by pilgrimaging to designated Jubilee Sites – from Rome to within their own Diocese! This Jubilee Year, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion has been designated a Jubilee Site by Bishop David Ricken.

With joyful hearts, we welcome pilgrims – near and far – to find spiritual refuge and hope at Our Lady of Champion’s Shrine. We invite the faithful to hold on to Our Blessed Mother’s Words to Adele, “Go and fear nothing, I will help you,” during this Jubilee Year, finding comfort in Mary, Our Mother of Hope!

We hope this website aids in your planning for the Jubilee Year.

Receive Special Jubilee Graces

A plenary indulgence, or Jubilee grace, might be obtained by devoutly visiting the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion during the Jubilee Year.

An indulgence is a powerful gift to the souls of believers. Indulgences aid in healing the brokenness caused by our sins in this world and reduce or completely eliminate the temporal punishment due to our sins. Indulgences are either partial or plenary (complete), and may be obtained for oneself or for the souls of the deceased. One plenary indulgence may be received each day. To obtain this special Jubilee grace, those members of the faithful who are truly
repentant of their sins and moved by a spirit of mercy are to:

Please Note: The Sacrament of Penance may be received several days before or after performing the prescribed acts.

Mary, Our Mother of Hope

The Beauty of Encountering Our Lady at Her Shrines this Jubilee Year

Hope finds its supreme witness in the Mother of God. In the Blessed Virgin, we see that hope is not naïve optimism but a gift of grace amid the realities of life. Like every mother, whenever Mary looked at her Son, she thought of his future. Surely she kept pondering in her heart the words spoken to her in the Temple by the elderly Simeon: “This child is destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed, so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed – and a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Lk 2:34-35). At the foot of the cross, she witnessed the passion and death of Jesus, her innocent son. Overwhelmed with grief, she nonetheless renewed her “fiat”, never abandoning her hope and trust in God. In this way, Mary cooperated for our sake in the fulfilment of all that her Son had foretold in announcing that he would have to “undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again” (Mk 8:31). In the travail of that sorrow, offered in love, Mary became our Mother, the Mother of Hope. It is not by chance that popular piety continues to invoke the Blessed Virgin as Stella Maris, a title that bespeaks the sure hope that, amid the tempests of this life, the Mother of God comes to our aid, sustains us and encourages us to persevere in hope and trust.

Through Juan Diego, the Mother of God brought a revolutionary message of hope that she continues to bring to every pilgrim and all the faithful: “Am I not here, who am your Mother?” That message continues to touch hearts in the many Marian shrines throughout the world, where countless pilgrims commend to the holy Mother of God their cares, their sorrows and their hopes. During the Jubilee Year, may these shrines be sacred places of welcome and privileged spaces for the rebirth of hope. […] I am confident that everyone, especially the suffering and those most in need, will come to know the closeness of Mary, the most affectionate of mothers, who never abandons her children and who, for the holy people of God, is “a sign of certain hope and comfort” (Spes non confundit, 24).

Jubilee FAQs

What is a Jubilee Year?2025-01-13T17:13:55-05:00

In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year, or Jubilee, is a great religious event. It is a year of forgiveness of sins and also the punishment due to sin; it is a year of reconciliation between adversaries, of conversion and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and consequently of solidarity, hope, justice, commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters. A Jubilee year is, above all, the year of Christ, who brings life and grace to humanity (Vatican.Va).

Traditionally, a Jubilee Year takes place every 25 years unless otherwise declared by the Holy See.

Why the theme “Pilgrims of Hope?”2025-01-13T17:17:05-05:00

Pope Francis stated in his February 2022 letter announcing the Jubilee 2025, Pilgrims of Hope: “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire…” (USCCB)

What is a Plenary Indulgence, and How Can I Receive One?2025-01-17T17:38:25-05:00

The Glossary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that an indulgence is “the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sin whose guilt has already been forgiven. In other words, we can receive from God a partial or complete canceling of our “purgatory time” by gaining an indulgence.

A plenary indulgence can be gained only once daily, but partials are unlimited. In order to obtain the Jubilee plenary indulgence, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace:

  1. Visit one of the designated Jubilee churches or shrines. Or perform the prescribed act.
  2. Receive the Sacrament of Penance by going to Confession. (The Sacrament of Penance may be received several days before or after performing the prescribed acts.)
  3. Receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
  4. Be truly free from all willful attachment to sin.
  5. Make a Profession of Faith. (Recite the Nicene or Apostles Creed)
  6. Pray for Pope Francis’ intentions for the Church and for the world. (Recite the Our Father)

**To receive these special graces, one must be truly free from all willful attachment to sin.

Living as a faithful Catholic is an intense way of life that orients us towards striving to love God above all things and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Living to receive indulgences is already “waiting well” and living in hope.

The Gift of Indulgences:
The marvelous thing about fulfilling the requirements to receive an indulgence is that we trust that the Lord will draw from His infinite merits, won by His passion, death, and resurrection, special graces for the person who is asking for them. Christ has given the Catholic Church the power to forgive sins (John 20:21-23) and the power to bind and loose (Matt. 18:18). Building a habit of receiving indulgences eliminates the temporal punishment due to sin (purgatory time) and cooperates with God’s grace to be in deeper communion with Him.

How Do I Know If I Have Received the Plenary Indulgence?2025-01-17T17:04:01-05:00

A plenary indulgence can be gained only once daily, but partials are unlimited. In order to obtain a Jubilee plenary indulgence, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace:

How Do We Know If We Have Received the Plenary Indulgence?
God knows, and that is Who matters. The act of fulfilling these requirements hopefully helps us begin forming new habits and breaking old bad habits that lead to sinful behavior. The hardest requirement to fulfill may be the last one noted: to have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin. That means a person needs to hate all their sins and be willing to renounce their attachment to them. If a person is unwilling to at least try to amend their situation, they may be attached to that sin. This is distinct from human weakness when a person might repeatedly fall to a sin. A daily self-examination of conscience helps an individual discern what their particular sins and attachments might be.

What Other Locations Besides Champion are Designated as Jubilee Sites in the Diocese of Green Bay?2025-01-13T17:29:40-05:00
