St. John Neumann

St. John Neumann – Saints of America Biography

John Neumann (1811–1860) was born in Bohemia. Gifted academically and spiritually, he desired to become a priest. When the local seminary stopped ordaining men to the priesthood, he courageously set out alone for the United States. Arriving with little money and speaking multiple languages, he dedicated himself to serving poor immigrants and frontier communities. He joined the Redemptorists and became known for his humility, tireless missionary work, and pastoral care. As Bishop of Philadelphia, he established the first diocesan Catholic school system in the U.S., opening nearly 100 schools. His deep faith, simplicity, and selfless service shaped Catholic education and parish life across America.
