St. Katharine Drexel – Saints of America Biography

Katharine Drexel (1858–1955) was born in Philadelphia to a wealthy family. Though raised in privilege, she was deeply moved by the struggles of marginalized communities, especially African Americans and Native Americans. Inspired by a call to serve those often forgotten by society, she gave up her inheritance and became a religious sister. In 1891, she founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, dedicating her life and fortune to racial justice. Known for her courage, generosity, and commitment to social equality, she used her resources to uplift the oppressed. Her life of faith-driven activism and unwavering compassion left a lasting legacy in education and civil rights.
