
St. Rose Philippine Duchesne – Saints of America Biography
St. Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769–1852)was born in France and joined the Society of the Sacred Heart despite family opposition. Deeply committed to missionary work, she felt called to serve the Indigenous peoples in North America. In 1818, she sailed to the United States and established the first Sacred Heart school for girls in St. Charles, Missouri. Though she struggled with language barriers and harsh conditions, her perseverance and dedication to prayer earned her the name “The Woman Who Prays Always” from the Potawatomi people she later served. Known for her humility, resilience, and unwavering faith, she helped expand Catholic education on the American frontier and became a symbol of missionary devotion.
