Our Lady Cares for the Sick: A Polio Survivor Shares An Answered Prayer from 1955

Our Lady Cares for the Sick: A Polio Survivor Shares An Answered Prayer from 1955 [Champion Blog by Roy Rasmussen] Decades before The National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion became an international pilgrimage site, local residents were coming here to ask the Blessed Mother for healings. While the healing reports we receive are not declared miracles without a long Church process, many personal encounters and graces received bear witness to the love Our Lady and Our Lord have for those who struggle with illnesses and disabilities. Recently we received a beautiful letter from a woman with polio who had generously donated one of her leg braces to The Shrine in a gesture of gratitude for a prayer answered over 70 years ago. Our friend wrote, “At 4 ½ years of age [I]

Heroes with halos: Shrine unites faithful and saints for Fourth of July celebration

CHAMPION, Wis. (OSV News) — A small churchyard amid Wisconsin farmland became the site of a big holiday celebration over the Fourth of July weekend. There were no carnival rides, parades, apple pie or fireworks. Not even a brass band. It was, however, a gathering of families in faith. The National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion hosted a celebration of Catholic Saints of America July 1-9. With relics of 14 saints and blesseds, along with tents of displays from shrines and sainthood guilds around the country, the shrine celebrated what it means to be Catholic Americans. “Yes, we are faithful citizens of the United States of America, but we are first of all, by baptism, Catholics,” Father of Mercy Nathanael Mudd, shrine chaplain, told OSV News. “And that identity, as sons and daughters of God

American Saints Photo Album

Thousands of pilgrims gathered at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion for the Catholic Saints of America Exhibit, a first-of-its-kind celebration honoring the saints, blesseds, venerables, and servants of God who helped shape the Catholic story of our nation. One of the most beautiful parts of this exhibit was seeing so many different causes, shrines, guilds, families, and pilgrims come together from across the country. Each display told a story. Each relic, photo, timeline, and testimony helped remind us that holiness is not something far away. Sainthood is possible here, in our own country, in our own families, and in our own time. Families walked through the Hall of American Holiness learning about heroic priests, religious sisters, martyrs, missionaries, mothers, fathers, children, and everyday witnesses who gave their lives to Christ.
